Therapy of the Substance Abuse Syndromes HENRY JAY RICHARDS New Jersey, Jason Aronson, Inc., 1993, 478 pp.

This book is an impressive and interesting monograph on the subject of substance abuse. The book provides the reader with a systematic and comprehensive approach to substance abuse treatment. In more than 450 pages it combines both theoretic demands and clinical relevance. The models and methods presented have been developed specifically to address treatment planning for patients, who have been recurrent treatment failures in both psychotherapy and addiction treatment programmes, so it is of particular use for those who work in dual diagnosis programmes as well as therapists in psychiatric or addiction facilities.

In discussing theoretical implications in close connection with and relation to clinical programmes, Richards develops his own framework that is also useful and interesting for readers that do not share all of his ideas. From my own point of view this is a big advantage of this work. Richards describes the process of addiction as a movement to a cycle of three primitive states of self-experience: (1) a position typified by egoism and assertiveness (the inflated-grandiose position); (2) a position typified by depression and helplessness (the depleted-depressed position); and (3) a position typified by isolation, fantasy an self-absorption (the detached-schizoid position). Movement in this cycle is given by failures in self-regulation.

With respect to his goal of organizing and planning several specialized programmes including substance abuse services, Richards presents a comprehensive system for assessment and treatment planning based on a dual diagnosis paradigm. The system consists of three interrelated concept sets: drug categories, symptom complexes and biopsychosocial functions of addiction.

All in all this is a substantial contribution to treatment research and the discussion of special needs for patients with severe mental illness and addiction. It can also be recommended to European and other non-American readers, although it is written from a background of special experiences in the United States of America.

Thinking Classroom, The: Learning and Teaching in a Culture of Thinking
Published in Paperback by Pearson Allyn & Bacon (06 October, 1994)
Authors: Shari Tishman, David N. Perkins, and Eileen Jay
Average review score:

Great Book! Intelligent Approaches to Thinking and Learning
"The Thinking Classroom:" Learning and Teaching in a Culture of Thinking by Shari Tishman, David N. Perkins and Eileen Jay is a great book. The book is one of the top picks as required reading for participants of the "Project Zero Institute" at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education. These great Harvard Professors present a 207 page book that is worth reading over and over.

I purchased it for my professional library and refer to it often. My particular interests are "Thinking Dispositions" which are addressed very well, but must be reflected upon from time to time to be sure that genuine understanding is obtained.

This is not a one time read type of a book and then put away. This is a book for those who are profoundly interested in knowing, reflecting and understanding connections to "thinking" and "understanding"... and especially "thinking dispositions".

You may be a brilliant individual who doesn't seem to accomplish what is expected of you either from teachers, employers and/or particularly yourself. Maybe the content in this book on thinking dispositions might explain something to you.

This book is for the scholar and the learner...and not a difficult read.

Three Conversations About Knowing
Published in Library Binding by Hackett Publishing Co. (January, 2001)
Author: Jay F. Rosenberg
Average review score:

Objectives met, but little more
I couldn't really decide whether to give this booklet 4 or 5 stars. If the objective of the book was simply to bring the different epistemological issues and positions near to the novice reader, then it certainly should get 5 stars, for it did that very well. In three conversations, several bright young students interested in epistemology debate what we can know and how so. Topics discussed are skepticism/certainty, internalism/externalism, foundationalism/coherentism, and the nature and limits of justification.

To its disadvantage, the book is a bit short and leaves the reader with no real conclusions. The debate is left open, though that is perhaps a good thing because it seems that the academic debate on these epistemological issues is still open as well. However, I had hoped that Jay Rosenberg could provide us with some insight as to how we can solve the dilemma between the fact that we DO know things and yet at times seem unable to explain just HOW we know things or even to demonstrate THAT we know things.

So, again, the booklet has fulfilled its objective of introducing the uninitiated reader into the issues of contemporary epistemology. More than that, however, is not found in this booklet.

Throughout Your Generations Forever: Sacrifice, Religion, and Paternity
Published in Paperback by University of Chicago Press (December, 1993)
Authors: Nancy Jay and Karen Fields
Average review score:

This book explains relation between sacrifice and patriarch
The author is very brilliant. She explains how sacrifice have functioned to maintain patrilineal system. I think this book could contribute to reveal contradiction of monolineal genealogy. It is not nature but culture.

To Skim the Smoke: Poems
Published in Paperback by Edwin Mellen Press (April, 1997)
Author: Jay Allan Liveson
Average review score:

Liveson's poetry focuses on the frailities of body & soul.
Liveson's poems are short poignant vignettes which expose the frailities and pain which people experience as they confront sickness . His works also however include celebratory paeans to the triumph of the human spirit as reflected in the "small" moments of life. His poetry is incredibly accessible to readers on many levels.

Published in Paperback by Haynes Publishing (December, 2001)
Authors: Robert Maddox, Jay Storer, John H. Haynes, and Haynes Publishing
Average review score:

Terrific book! Everyone should have one!
Everyone should get the repair manual for their car from Haynes or Chilton. These are great books that provide very detailed information for you to make most repairs.

I firmly believe it's a good idea to use this as a reference to at least learn to do basic maintenance. This book will end up saving you a lot of money and it will ensure that your car lasts for a long time. For the more experienced do-it-yourselfer, you already know what a great book this is for auto repair, so there's no need to convince you.

If not to do your own repair work, consider this to help you understand your car and better communicate with your mechanic.

Transforming Human Culture: Social Evolution and the Planetary Crisis (Suny Series in Constructive Postmodern Thought)
Published in Hardcover by State Univ of New York Pr (July, 1997)

Average review score:

Wow...
Earley, a computer scientist turned psychotherapist, offers a compelling historical analysis that purports to explain nothing less than how we as a species arrived at our present global ecological and social impasse, and what we need to do to emerge from it reborn. This should be, as a customer commented about another book, "required reading for the planet."
